Baby Sign Language

We’ve all heard about baby sign language, but is it beneficial? Here’s what the experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics have to say:

  • Benefits of baby sign language:
    • Improved communication- it allows for better understanding of baby’s wants before they have the ability to express it in words
    • Interactive time with baby- it provides time
  • When and how to begin:
    • Whenever you’d like!
      • It is never too early to start showing baby signs and what they represent (just keep expectations reasonably low)
        • It is generally around 6-7 months of age that they will be able to start performing signs
    • Acquaint yourself with simple baby sign language and slowly introduce the signs into daily life
      • Show your baby the sign multiple times while saying the word and showing your baby the object you are referring to
    • Make sure to involve all of the caregivers for baby
      • Try to ensure everyone who cares for the baby knows the signs and what they mean to ensure the most effective communication

Baby sign language can be a wonderful tool to aid in communication with a young child. We hope these notes will be helpful in getting your family started! As always, if you have questions or concerns regarding baby sign language and communication, please contact your pediatrician.
