Baby Sign Language

We’ve all heard about baby sign language, but is it beneficial? Here’s what the experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics have to say:

  • Benefits of baby sign language:
    • Improved communication- it allows for better understanding of baby’s wants before they have the ability to express it in words
    • Interactive time with baby- it provides time
  • When and how to begin:
    • Whenever you’d like!
      • It is never too early to start showing baby signs and what they represent (just keep expectations reasonably low)
        • It is generally around 6-7 months of age that they will be able to start performing signs
    • Acquaint yourself with simple baby sign language and slowly introduce the signs into daily life
      • Show your baby the sign multiple times while saying the word and showing your baby the object you are referring to
    • Make sure to involve all of the caregivers for baby
      • Try to ensure everyone who cares for the baby knows the signs and what they mean to ensure the most effective communication
