Dealing with Dry Skin

Winter weather can make everyone’s skin dry and cracked, but especially kids! Here are some tips from the experts at the American Academy of Pediatrics to help keep your little one’s skin healthy this season!

  • Bath time:
    • Short, lukewarm baths are best to prevent dry skin
      • 10 minutes or less is ideal
      • 3x per week with intermittent “spot cleaning” is ideal
    • Avoid scented soaps and bubble bath
    • Dry off with light pats of a towel on the skin rather than rubbing
    • Moisturize right after bathtime
  • Soaps & Lotions:
    • Select products that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic
    • Ointments, creams, and lotions- what’s the difference?
      • Well, from left –> right, they get thinner, contain less oil, and have more water
        • Winter months often call for thicker, more oil-based products, while warm months call for thinner and lighter options
      • Best to apply these products immediately after patting dry skin to lock in moisture!
  • Is it more than just dry skin?
    • Does it itch? If in addition to dry skin, your child complains of itchiness, it could be eczema and should be evaluated by your child’s pediatrician.
    • Other concerns? Contact your pediatrician.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding dry skin, please contact your pediatrician. Here are some helpful links from the American Academy of Pediatrics:
