Dressing Children for Cold Temperatures

As the temperature drops, our wardrobes need a little adjusting- and so do our kids’! Here are some helpful tips from the experts at the American Academy of Pediatrics to keep kids warm this winter.

  • Layer up!
    • As a rule, children should have one additional layer than adults in the same temperature
    • Layers allow you to adjust your child’s outfit quickly when going from outdoors to indoors
      • Puffy coats and bodysuits are great for being outside on really chilly days, but should NEVER be worn in a car seat due to safety issues
    • Add a hat, warm socks, boots, and mittens when outdoors in cold weather
      • Be sure to remove items that get wet right away (pack spares!)
  • Sleeping
    • Select appropriately warm pajamas for you child
    • Blankets, quilts, and other items should NOT be placed in bed with an infant due to risk of suffocation
    • If necessary due to cold temperatures, a thin blanket may be added (tucked in) to the bed only to a level below the child’s chest

As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding dressing your child for cold temperatures, please contact your pediatrician. Here is a helpful link from the American Academy of Pediatrics:
